Dining Room Makeover

The much anticipated dining room makeover is finally here, and just in time to celebrate the fact that my husband and I bought our first house and officially moved in one year ago today! We have done a ton of work, i.e. furnishing an entire house(still have 2 rooms left to do and some final details), painting, and really transforming each living space and room into our own to reflect our personal style.

We had lived in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath with a garage, inside stairs, and a balcony since we were on the upper level, but we didn’t have a formal dining room, so this was such a fun space to really make our own. The space took a little bit to fully come together, but I am in love with how it all turned out! Luckily, I have a handy husband to help me turn my vision into a reality with some DIY projects he did for me.

Here is the before picture from when we purchased our house and how the previous owners had it set up, and one that my husband took on his phone pre-paint, light fixture change and tablescape complete.

Once we moved in, I knew exactly what table and chairs I wanted, so we headed to Restoration Hardware to pick up this gorgeous table that seats 6. Originally we ordered the larger size to seat 8, and once we measured back at home, it was clear that anyone bigger than me(I am 5’2.5″ and pretty petite) would not be able to scoot out from the table ends very comfortably. I was so happy with our choice to go with the smaller table once it came in, because otherwise it would have definitely been a bit too tight!

I have been loving gold accents lately, and went with lots of gold accents in the dining room, which really play nicely off the paint color we went with as well! We tested the gold idea on the candle sconces on either side of the art piece, which were originally black at our old place. My husband is super handy, and spray painted them a matte gold for me. I loved the way they turned out and then obsessed with gold! The room came together piece by piece, with finding the art piece shortly after we moved in. The sunburst mirrors, light fixture, and gold curtain rod took awhile to find, as well as having to order a few different curtains until the material and look I had envisioned finally came in. The gold candle sticks were also super tough to find, since I wanted something delicate and traditional looking, and so many out there right now are modern or too heavy. I loved how the gold mercury candle holders that came in different shapes and sizes really helped to balance everything out with the grey table runner really bringing everything together!

I ended not helping my husband paint the dining room once he cut in the edges like I had planned to. I was watching a movie and drinking a glass of wine, when my cat, Remi(our big orange fluffy cat you may have seen in a picture or two in this post) laid down on me. Naturally, I couldn’t dare make him move since he was so sweet and I ended up falling asleep too, haha. I woke up about an hour or so later and my husband had finished painting the entire dining room himself! Now I know how to plan to get out of helping for our next painting project πŸ˜‰ I did help him hang the dining room light fixture by holding it up(it was super heavy too, so I also counted that as my arm workout for the day!), and he even learned how to do electric work just so he could put that light up for me!

The part of the dining room I love most, besides the simple tablescape I created, is the transformation of our leaning wine bar. The white bar in the corner actually used to be brown! It just didn’t look quite right with the rest of our theme, so my husband sanded it down and painted it white, which brought it completely back to life and really made it pop! I am telling you, I have a great man to do all these projects for me and learn how to do electrical work because I don’t like a light!

Let me know what you think of our makeover project! Now, I just need to organize a dinner party so we can actually use this beautiful room we created! Do you enjoy recreating your living spaces to give them an entirely different look? Let me know in the comments!

I really love the gold and white against the wall color, and how the wall colors look different in some of the photos because of the time of day – good to see how it looks at different times of the day! Beautiful makeover!

Thank you so much, Mom! I think the paint color really does make the gold and white pop! And you are right, it does change at different times of day so it is fun to see how it changes πŸ™‚ I am so proud of how it turned out!!
